The house
Sitting in stunning Puglian countryside with views over olive groves and woodland, Trullo Callisto offers a restorative and peaceful location, and yet is only a short drive to the nearest town - Ceglie Messipica, known as the centre of the slow food movement in Puglia and a stunning white hilltop beauty. Located in the world renowned Valle D’Itria, comprising of a further six stunning, historic hilltop towns and seemingly endless olive groves scattered with unique trulli, which this region is so famous for. From the garden full of olive, fig and almond trees, which surrounds the house, you can see four of the hilltop towns that make this area of Puglia so very special.
The house has four good sized bedrooms - one king, two doubles and a twin - all are ensuite, three are in the main house and one double is in the unique conical shaped trullo which adjoins the house but has its own entrance, ideal for those wanting a little separation from the main party. There is a large and airy kitchen with a electric and gas cooker, dishwasher and two fridges. We are keen cooks so there are plenty of kitchen utensils to cook up the greatest feast! Leading out from the kitchen garden doors is an outside eating area, covered for extra shade. The sitting room is a quiet spot for reading with comfy sofas for those wanting to escape the sun with a second sitting area in the kitchen with a sofa in front of the wood-burning stove - for the winter months!
Outside there are plenty of places to dine and sit in shady spots. A favourite is under the pine trees looking out over the olive groves, outside the kitchen there is an outdoor eating area and a covered huge table by the pool close to the gas and wood BBQ. At the opposite end of the pool there is a sitting area, a special spot for an evening sundowner plus a large chillout area area outside the trullo. By the pool is a covered double ‘Bali’ bed and sun loungers.
The pool is 8x5m with a shallow ledge along one side to enjoy the uninterrupted view. It is tended twice a week. Down the hill from the pool is a yoga platform for those who wish to exercise and meditate. The house and pool are private, for your sole use.
We have been visiting Puglia for many years and finally in 2016 took the plunge and bought Trullo Callisto, then began its refurbishment. The house was an old farmhouse - a lamia with its traditional curved high ceiling and a trullo: a conical shaped farm building which this region of Puglia is famous for. Although we have renovated it, our aim, naturally was to maintain its historical charm.
We named the house Callisto taken from Greek mythology; Callisto was a nymph who was flung up into the sky as Ursa Major - The Great Bear - to protect her. She can be seen in the sky above the house on clear evenings.
