Puglia
Welcome to Puglia (poo-lia), Italy's south-eastern most region, the heel of the boot.
Puglia is the perfect holiday destination, offering not only some of Italy's loveliest beaches but also a sublime climate, a series of fascinating towns, a number of important archaeological sites and, last but certainly not least, amazing food with Ceglie Messipica, our closest town being the very centre of Puglia’a slow food movement, hence bursting with local produce, markets and fabulous places to eat.
With over 800km of coastline, Puglia is well-loved by those who want to spend time on a beach or swim in the open sea! Trullo Callisto is situated between two seas, the Adriatic shores near Ostuni and Torre Canne and the enormous stretches of sandy beaches on the Ionian Sea , you never have to go far to find the ideal spot.
Trullo Callisto is surrounded by the central Puglian towns of Alberobello, Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca, located in the Valle D’Itria famous for delightful historic, town centres and their trulli, traditional circular stone houses with conical roofs, Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has the greatest collection of trulli. Further afield is the breathtaking baroque town of Lecce and Grottaglie, famous for it’s ceramics with numerous studios to visit.
Each town has a weekly market, so you don’t have to go far to find abundant local produce. The Pugliese also love a good fiesta and throughout the summer months most towns host a festival with spectacular lights and music.
Beaches
With its extensive coastline there are beaches nearby to suit everyone, maybe you want a cool beach bar or a private secluded spot, a challenging sea or a calm bay - they are all to be found whether on the Adriatic or Ionian coast.
Food
The produce and food in this area is seriously good. The restaurants serve local ingredients, so fresh and always in season. In the summer, expect amazing vegetables, of course bountiful tomatoes, all salad crops, fruits including watermelons, apricots and citrus fruits. In September add figs, chestnuts and mushrooms but always incredible seafood, pasta, pizza and the local speciality of bombetti - small parcels of meat to BBQ.
Ceglie Messipica and the area close by has excellent restaurants, we have great recommendations for you, all in a file at the house - the best pastry and ice cream shops, local butchers and markets.
